13th in the World: Automation and Control Engineering

Ranked above Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge universities, the University of Newcastle has established itself as a global leader in the field of Automation and Control Engineering*.

We’re amongst the great company of universities with enviable global reputations like MIT, Stanford and Harvard, and we have maintained our 1st place in Australia.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (AWRU), commonly referred to as the Shanghai Rankings are one of the more major university rankings systems in the world. The ARWU ranking was developed by Shanghai Jiao-Tong University in China, one of China’s most prestigious universities. As such, the rankings have particular credibility in China.

From driverless cars, to smart electricity networks and artificial organs, well-designed feedback control provides robust, reliable, and efficient systems by choosing corrective actions based on collecting available data. At the University of Newcastle, we're pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in this exciting field of research.

Take the work of Professor Graham Goodwin and his team, whose artificial pancreas is set to be a game-changer for those living with diabetes. The externally-worn insulin pump will employ a complex control algorithm to continually regulate the patient’s blood glucose level by calculating the insulin requirements, and adjusting the supply of insulin accordingly.

Another example is the remarkable research being carried out by Associate Professor Adrian Wills and his team to deliver decision making solutions in the presence of uncertainty, from applications to sensor compromised data fusion for autonomous systems, to personalised rehabilitation for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Automation and control can save lives, and advance almost any field imaginable.

Our inspiring teachers and academics empower students to reach beyond what has come before.

You can be sure great things are ahead. Imagine being a part of it.
